What is Allergy Immunology

Immunology is a very broad branch of biological science. It is commonly defined as the study of the immune system. In medicine, an immunologist is a specialist who uses his knowledge to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients with immunological disorders like asthma, food allergies, sinusitis, and more. In Phoenix, immunologists is commonly referred to as  allergists.
Specially Licensure:

An allergy immunologist such as Dr. Habib-Khazen and Dr Alasaly had to go through years of education and training in order to learn how to treat and manage allergies and asthma.
Our doctors must complete a medical degree, and then, train as a physician in either pediatrics or internal medicine. Once training has been completed, the physician must pass either the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics.

To become an immunologist, a physician must undergo an additional two years of study (fellowship) focusing on immunology, and  pass the American Board of Allergy and Immunology’s certifying exam.

An allergist/immunologist's education and training doesn't stop there. Because immunology is applied to several other scientific disciplines, new discoveries in the field are continually being made. To remain a certified immunologist in Phoenix, continued medical education is  necessary in order to keep up with the latest news and remain competent in the field.

The Role of the Allergy/Immunologist:
Unlike other types of diseases, allergic disease isn’t a condition that can “go away” easily. Some people dismiss allergies and regard them as a mere nuisance. Patients who suffer from allergies know that this condition can  be debilitating and  keep them from their daily routines.

An effective Phoenix immunologist diagnoses the condition and provides a management plan to help the patient manage his allergy or asthma better, reducing the number of times the patient misses school or work because he/she has to stay at home to rest. The immunologist uses different allergy tests to determine what a patient is allergic to and what triggers allergic reactions. These tests include allergy skin testing, pulmonary function testing, penicillin testing, food testing, chemical and food patch testing, and venom and stinging insect testing.

Why Choose an Allergy Doctor over your regular Doctor or Naturopath?

Your relationship with your Phoenix allergy doctors should be a relationship you can trust. You want to know for certain that you or your child will receive the best care available for asthma and allergy symptoms in Arizona. In the realm of allergy and asthma, where difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis are always a possibility, you're putting your life in your doctor's hands.

An Allergy Doctor Versus A General Practitioner
The benefit of seeing an allergy doctor is that a specialist's focus is on allergy symptoms, triggers, and treatments. A general practitioner has a broad overview of many health conditions, but an allergy doctor has unique exposure to and experience with allergies. By having a narrower focus, a specialist is able to give you better insight into the causes and remedies for your condition.

A Variety of Techniques
Your allergy doctor should be familiar with a variety of testing and treatment techniques to meet your unique needs. Our Phoenix area locations all perform allergy scratch testing, food allergy testing, asthma management, and allergy/immunotherapy to help you navigate life with these sometimes-chronic conditions.

Multiple Arizona Locations

What? You think that you have Food Allergies?

Your immune system prevents the invasion of your body by infectious organisms, such as viruses, bacteria and molds. These invaders are recognized as foreign by the cells of the immune system and are destroyed. But nothing, including your immune system, is perfect and that leads us to food allergies. A mistaken identification sets off a cascade of events that can lead to a very serious reaction.

Do all foods cause allergies?

While the potential is there for every food, certain types are more likely to cause allergic reactions. Peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, soy, shellfish and wheat are the likeliest suspects. The proteins in these foods have certain similar characteristics that make them appear alien to your body.

Skin and mucous membranes:
  • Itching - Both the mouth and skin.
  • Flushing - Blood vessels dilate and the skin turns red.
  • Swelling - The skin and mucous membranes swell up as fluid from the blood seeps into the tissues.

Upper respiratory system:
  • Nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose - Also due to seepage of fluid from the blood to the tissues.
  • Stridor and wheezing - Swelling and edema of the voice box, trachea and bronchial tubes.

Lower respiratory system:
  • Cough and shortness of breath - The lungs can fill with fluid in severe cases.

Gastrointestinal system:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain - Secondary to swelling in the walls of the intestines.

Cardiovascular system:
  • Hypotension, shock and death - As fluid leaves the blood vessels, blood pressure drops and the heart no longer pumps efficiently.

Most cases resolve spontaneously and fatal cases are rare. Children frequently outgrow their sensitivity to milk, soy and wheat. But allergies to peanuts, nuts and shellfish tend to persist and run in families.

If you have a family member with food allergies, you want the best possible care. You want a Board Certified Allergist who will use science based knowledge to keep the ones you love safe. Too many supposed "specialists" depend on treatments that have no scientific basis. Keep your family safe. Set up an appointment with a real allergy specialist today for allergy testing.

Primary Causes for Adult Onset Asthma

Most people think that asthma is an illness that is a person has their entire life. However, the truth is that there are factors that contribute to the development of asthma over time. Most people develop asthma when they are young, but symptoms may not who until you are an adult. Called adult onset asthma, there are a wealth of cases where people did not present asthma symptoms until they were in their 50s or older.

The following are some of the primary causes for asthma to present in adults.

Allergies

Allergies results in roughly 30% of the occurrence of adult onset asthma. Regular exposure to allergens can trigger asthma symptoms. If you regular suffer from allergies, it is better to be cautious about the possibility that it could lead to the presentation of asthma symptoms.

Hormones

Like allergies, hormone fluctuations can trigger asthma symptoms, particularly in women. For adults, the times where hormone changes are likely to cause asthma symptoms to appear are pregnancy and menopause. If you find that you are experiencing shortness of breath during either of these phases, it would be best to check with an asthma specialist to see if the issue goes beyond just a hormone imbalance.

Illness

Different types of infections and viruses can trigger asthma symptoms, and it is likely more difficult to detect during these times. Even illnesses as innocuous sounds as a bad cold can result in asthma symptoms appearing.

Smoke

Surprisingly, smoking is not a cause for the illness, but it can provide symptoms if they have already presented. This is true for smokers and those who are regularly exposed to second-and smoke. You should probably be consulting with a pulmonary specialist if you smoke or if you are frequently exposed to smoke. Shortness of breath could be caused by something more insidious than adult onset asthma.

If you have been experiencing problems with breathing, but have not been diagnosed with asthma, that does not mean you do not have it. Call or schedule an appointment with one of our specialists today and get comprehensive testing and treatment for your asthma.
